Yes.7. How does a woman’s age affect her chances of becoming pregnant and carrying her baby to full term?
As a woman gets older it becomes increasingly difficult for her to conceive. Among the most important reasons for age-related infertility in women is the natural decline in the number of genetically normal eggs that occurs as she ages. When a woman reaches her mid to late 30s there are approximately 25,000 eggs remaining in her ovaries, and the loss rate of oocytes increases. Additionally, the ability of her oocytes to divide and distribute their genetic contents normally declines with each passing year. The likelihood that an oocyte with an abnormal number of chromosomes will be fertilized, resulting in a genetically abnormal pregnancy, increases with age. Most genetically abnormal pregnancies are miscarried in the first or second trimester of pregnancy.
For women 35+ (particularly those over 40) the risk of miscarrying genetically normal pregnancies is also higher. Several studies have found that in women over 40, the overall risk of miscarrying a pregnancy is about 75%.
8. What lifestyle choices will maximize my chances of becoming pregnant?
To maximize your chances of conceiving we recommend that both you and your partner maintain a healthy lifestyle by:• Eating a balanced diet.
• Not smoking.
• Reducing alcohol and caffeine intake.
• Participating in regular moderate exercise.
• Getting enough sleep and minimizing stress.
